Youth by Joseph Conrad

Hello Class,
Since the boys will be leaving us for the island on Tuesday after school, I thought it a good idea to publish the assignment for this week so everyone has access to it for at least a day. On page 33 and 34 of the story there is listed a number of questions that help with understanding what the narrator of the story was saying.
1. As a group discuss the first question.
2. Since you boys are all stuck in the school van with nothing to do but discuss English short stores, talk together about question #3.
3. Read question 4. It struck me as I read this aloud to you that each of the people around the table was described very precisely. Why do you think this is?
4. Read question 5. How was the voyage a symbol of existence?
5. Read question #8. How would you, a Christian, respond to that question?
6. Write a paragraph trying to copy Conrad's style.
Post your comments on the blog. Boys, you can post a group blog for us to discuss in class next week, Monday.
There is something about a volleyball game that is symbolic of life as well, I am sure. Not just that there are a lot of ups and downs, some settings that are easily bumped, some smashing spikes that cause one to look inward and upward. Where did that come from, Lord? You never know what He will serve up to you, so you have to be prepared for anything. One thing about God though, He always serves up something good. Make sure you make the best of what he serves you.
Have fun, class!

3. I think that the characters are mentioned in such great detail because then we can know who we are "sitting with", so to speak. I say this because he is telling the story to his friends and us together, as if we were in the bar/saloon with him.

4. personally, im not to sure that there is much 'symbolism of existence' in this voyage at all. I don’t see the importance in it because, after all, it is just coal they are transporting. I mean, im sure that there are people that need the coal but I don’t think that it is a that important. if it was gold they were transporting, or maybe the queen, then maybe, but I don’t see the 'symbol of existence'.

5. wow there are a lot of big words there. :) I think that nothing is chance. God has a grand plan that will happen no matter what we do or think. so yes I do think that the use of chance is too great to make a plausible story.

6. a paragraph using Conrad's style; interesting, ok, here it goes.
me and a few friends were playing monopoly and I decided to tell them a story. "I once had a dog whose name was Arf. Arf was a great dog and had a lot of energy. he would fetch the ball and chase the frisbee all day. Pass The Pop. but one day, Arf ran across the road to the neighbor's house to see woof. on the way back across the road....BAM!!....ARF! the dog was mooshed by a big mac truck. Pass The Pop. the next day, the neighbor's dog, woof, decided to pay us a visit. on the way across the road..BAM!..WOOF! and the big mac truck, um, creamed the poor pooch. Pass The Pop. ah. wonderful youth.

3. Alright they were deeply described to show there was a relationship between each of them. All of the gents around the table were related in their lifestyles. Each were old and full of years and all of them were familiar to the life of the sea, so they all could easily relate and imagine the tale that was told to them.

4. The voyage was a symbolism of one's life. The boat was that specific person. through the journey it had its ups and downs, its trials and successes and experiences from the journey. Another symbolism we talked about andi personally believe i thought of before it was mentioned was that their cargo was just coal, and all the troubles caused from it many would say it was not worth it. Thats the symbolism, simply that everything is worth it. To me atleast, get your own opinion.

5. umm no idea where #8 was, so i will use A.J.s answer as a way to interpret what the question was. I would say that in a way, nothing is chance. God has a plan for us but yet he allows things to happen. Although god is in complete control, doesnt mean were robots living in tinkertown. Were all beings with conflicts going on in our minds, and we have our own personal choices and experiences that make us who we are. God plays a major role in this, but not by dictating, but by directing and observing.

3. I think he described each person so presicely soley because each of the man around the mahogany table were all sea faring men. It also brings more insight and meaning as to why he would be telling such an explicit story.

4. I believe this voyage is a defeniate symbolism that we can accomadate into our lives. It displays surviving through the hardest of times, even when we want to give up, to keep trying. As the ship sinks, all hopoe would seem to be lost, yet in the end the men bear through and make it to the east. I believe we can learn alot from this story.

5. I believe that our lifes dont revolve around one solid plan. I believe chance is possible, and we make and choose many. God doesnt decide if we are christians before were born, or else he would have given up on many. I believe chance is a solid rock to place a story upon.

3) I think that the characters were described precisely because it makes the story more interesting. If we do not know about the characters then we will not pay close attention to what happens to them in the story. If we hear a story about our friends I think it is easier to listen than it is to listen to a story about people that we don’t know.

4) I think this story is a symbol of existence because it relates to the life of a person. Its shows what can happen in a lifetime, how we can go through many trials and still make it through without to much damage.

5) Nothing happens by chance. God is in control of everything.

3. I think that the characters are mentioned in such precise detail because it gives you more information about the story that you can use later to see ‘who’ exactly everybody is. The author may have also done this so that he could have got paid more for a longer story.

4. The voyage was a symbol of existence because it may represent Jesus’s life. He live and always endured everything in perfection and always was dependable. He later made his last journey to Jerusalem (Bankok) and then was crucified (shipwrecked) shortly after.
5. From the answer of AJ I think the question is asking this but I may be wrong. Nothing in this life ever happens by chance. God is in control of EVERYTHING.

3) I believe that the characters were described in such detail because it was an important part of the story so it was important that we got all the information about them as we could.

4) I think that the voyage was a symbol of somebody’s life. It shows some of the difficult parts of a person life and how we would just want to give up on it and not want to work through it, but we need to work through it.

5) Nothing happens by chance everything is in control by God such as Gray said.

3. The men around the table are described precisely because then you can get a better picture of the men then, some of their physical characteristics that can tell you about them and possibly their past experiences and maybe their knowledge of sailing.

4. The voyage is symbolic of a persons life because it has its hard times and good times the sinking at the end symbolizes a persons death.

5. The story may seem to be chance and if the ship was real and you were on that ship you might pray to God and ask him to deliver you and the ship from the storm but he might not and that is part of his divine plan and we have to accept that.

3. I think the characters were described precisely to give the reader a better picture of the characters. It could’ve also been done to make the short story more interesting. All the men around the table were friends so each probably could understand the details of the characters.

4. The journey in the story is like life's journey. There are struggles and times of fun, but sometimes we stray off the path. We also sometimes just stop somewhere. Also sometimes there is a fire or a terrible experience in our life ad we must recover.

5. Like Graham said, everything that happens is GOD's plan. Nothing is just by chance.
